Komal’s career journey
Leadership
I view myself, and I think the firm views me as a leader, and when I'm turned to, to make choices, lead projects, make decisions, it's not about being a woman, it's about being a leader. And I think that is what is really valued at KPMG.
Work/Life Balance
The key here is always predictability. You want to be able to build a schedule that's flexible, that you can manage, when you know you're going to be busy, or you're going to be free. I think the nice thing is, I live in New York City, and so there are a lot of great things in the city to take advantage of. You want to be able to know when you can go to a show, and schedule around that. And the beauty is, working at KPMG, you can do that.
Experiences
KPMG is definitely a great place to build a career. It's so diverse. And if you have a variety of interests, if you're just trying to dip your toe in the water, and trying to experiment, see what you like, you'll have several different opportunities to do that, either in your own experiences internally within KPMG, or by engaging with all of our diverse clients. You'll learn what the technology is, what the industry is doing. You'll learn about hedge funds. You'll learn about private equity. So whatever your interest, there's a place for you at KPMG. You can explore, and if it works, you can stay awhile.
Global Opportunities
The basis of what we do is working with multinational corporations. So I along with my colleagues throughout the world; we're about an 800 person practice. And we're officially called the Global Transfer Pricing Services Practice. So when I serve a U.S. multi-national corporation, in order for me to serve that U.S. multinational, I need assistance from countries, and my colleagues throughout the world. So, in serving my clients, in working with my global colleagues, I travel on a regular basis, whether it be to Europe, London, Madrid, Amsterdam. Or whether it's to Asia, to Beijing, to Tokyo, to Australia.
Mentoring
The great thing about being mentored is you learn very quickly the value of mentoring yourself. And part of, I think for most professionals at KPMG, something that we do as we grow in our careers is work with those, work with our team members. And it's very rewarding to have the privilege of being someone else's mentor, and helping them get through some of the same experiences that I've had to go through. And walking them through that and counseling them, and letting them know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. That's rewarding beyond words.
