Other career journeys

I've had the chance to have ten careers within one organization. People keep talking about it, how can you be at one place your whole career? And what I tell them is well I've had about ten careers within KPMG, in the 28 years. Starting out as an assistant accountant at KPMG in Minneapolis in 1979, I remember that first date, July 9th, 1979. Moving through, and working in the middle market practice, working in small companies, entrepreneurial based companies in Minneapolis. Then going into the audit practice, working at larger companies like Control Data, Create research. Big companies back then, but today people don't think of those. But they really were super computer companies, and really at the forefront of the technology, around the computing world. And then I took some time out of my professional career serving clients, and for two years was a senior manager for the national high technology practice. I had the opportunity to write some books. One was "Going Public: What the High Tech CO Needs to Know". I had a chance to work with organizations in start up funding, seed money from the federal government, through the small business innovation research grant program. I had the opportunity to do some travel, for the first time internationally, in that role. I went to Singapore and Hong Kong and spoke to organizations about small business development in the United States.
