Community involvement

Involve

KPMG has always taken an active role in supporting the communities in which we live and work. Our contributions of time and money are driven through a range of local office initiatives that are supported through Involve, our national community involvement program. Launched nearly fifteen years ago, Involve enables partners and employees to make a meaningful and positive impact on our communities.

Our professionals, retirees, and alumni carry out their vision of volunteerism and service by contributing to causes they believe are important. Involve works closely with a host of leading non-profit organizations, such as the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, American Heart Association, Habitat for Humanity, and Junior Achievement, to heighten that impact from both a national and a local affiliate level.

In 2001, KPMG launched the annual Family Volunteer Day, when thousands of KPMG professionals and their families from across the nation joined together to paint, plant, tutor, and build — all for the benefit of their local communities. The success of Family Volunteer Day led to the creation of KPMG's Season of Service — a time leading up to the holiday season when KPMG holds a number of important community initiatives in local offices, beginning with "My Good Deed" in September to honor 9/11, and continue through the United Way Day of Caring, National Make a Difference Day, and National Family Volunteer Day.

National Non-Profit Collaboration

KPMG collaborates with national not-for-profit organizations on national events, volunteer activities, and fundraising efforts. The following organizations were selected based on either the extensive involvement by KPMG's volunteers or the results of research, surveys, and focus groups that showed these were areas of interest to our partners and employees. These organizations have a proven track record of helping people face and overcome extraordinary challenges.

American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization. Headquartered in Atlanta, ACS has state divisions and more than 3,400 local offices. The organization's goal is to prevent cancer, save lives, and diminish suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and rehabilitation. KPMG has played an active role in raising funds for ACS, including supporting ACS's signature "Relay For Life" activities since 2001. In 2006 alone, over 950 KPMG employees and partners from 28 offices participated in Relay for Life events in their communities. In addition, the firm also participated in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Daffodil Days, helping to raise over $265,000 for cancer research, education, advocacy, and services. Annually, the firm gives nearly $525,000 for ACS initiatives through fund-raising events, our KPMG Community Giving Campaign, and others.

In May of 2006, the ACS presented KPMG with the inaugural Eugene D. O'Kelly Award in recognition of the firm's leadership and support in the fight against cancer. The annual award was named after Gene O'Kelly, KPMG's former chairman who passed away in September 2005 after being diagnosed with brain cancer, to acknowledge his commitment to community service and volunteerism.

American Red Cross

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization led by volunteers, guided by the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross Movement. Its purpose is to provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Hundreds of KPMG professionals devoted many hours of their personal time to help the victims of catastrophic events such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In addition, KPMG partners and employees opened up more than their hearts by participating in 35 blood drives across the country, devoting nearly 1,100 hours of their time, to donate almost 700 units of blood — helping to save as many as 2,100 lives.

March of Dimes

March of Dimes is committed to improving babies' health by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. The March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers, and advocates work together to give babies a fighting chance against threats to their health, including premature birth, defects, and low birth weight. They also help pregnant women understand what to do to have a healthy baby. With nearly 40 offices and nearly 900 walkers raising over $260,000 this past year for the March of Dimes Walk America, KPMG was a profession-leading contributor to Walk America in 2006. In total, KPMG contributes nearly $325,000 to March of Dimes each year.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society

KPMG, a National Partner of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, was recently recognized as the top contributor in its peer group of Big Four accounting firms. Whether cycling, walking, or running, last year, 21 KPMG teams led events raising nearly $215,000. Hundreds of KPMG participants trained on their bikes for months prior to help those affected by MS, an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. In addition, the firm donated an additional $56,000 in corporate contribution to MS for various fund-raising events, and our KPMG Community Giving Campaign raised another $26,000 for MS.

The society's mission is to end the devastating effects of MS. The Society and its network of chapters nationwide promote research, educate, advocate on critical issues, and organize a wide range of programs, including support for the newly diagnosed and those living with MS over time.

American Heart Association

The American Heart Association's mission is to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. That single purpose drives all they do. KPMG had 29 offices and over 600 partners, employees, family members, and friends engaged with the American Heart Association nationally, with nearly $80,000 raised to fight heart disease and related illness — making a difference in patient lives and assisting researchers in finding cures. In total, KPMG gives nearly $200,000 each year to the American Heart Association through the Heartwalk, Wear Red Campaign, our KPMG Community Giving Campaign, and other initiatives.

Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement seeks to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, business, and economics to improve the quality of their lives. In 2006, more than 20 KPMG teams participated in classroom mentoring, providing nearly 3,000 hours of instruction time to help young people understand the economics of life. In addition, 1,200 partner, employees, and friends raised $150,000 in bowl-a-thons and other fund-raising events. In total, KPMG donated $240,000 to Junior Achievement programs in 2006, including contributions through our KPMG Community Giving Campaign and others.
